Comenius

Who is he ?

John Amos Comenius was an innovative 17th century Czech Bishop whose ideas completely transformed education. He supported equal education for men and women, rich and poor alike. Comenius also was the first person to use pictures in textbooks. He believed that learning goes along with spiritual growth -- especially in the teaching of children.

Why is Comenius important to Europe?

Comenius’ quotes

“Let us have but one end in view, the welfare of humanity; and let us put aside all selfishness in consideration of language, nationality, or religion.”

“We are all citizens of one world. To hate a man because he was born somewhere else, because he speaks another language, because he thinks different of things, because he knows less or more than you know, what a misconception! We are all people and therefore not perfect. We all need help. Nobody is without obligations towards others.”

Although 300 years ago, his ideas show how important it is to understand and work with people in and out of Europe.

Comenius School Partnerships

Comenius School Partnerships aim at enhancing the European dimension of education by promoting co-operation activities between schools in Europe. The projects give pupils and teachers in different countries an opportunity to work together on one or more topics of mutual interest and take part in mobilities which are funded by the program. School partnerships help pupils and teachers to acquire and improve skills not only in the topic or subject area on which the project is focussed, but also in terms of teamwork, social relations, planning and undertaking project activities and using information and communication technologies (ICT). Participating in a partnership with schools from different countries also gives pupils and teachers the opportunity to practice foreign languages and increases their motivation towards language learning. A Multilateral School Partnership includes schools from at least 3 participating countries. One of the schools acts as coordinator.
